“PROGRAM UPDATE: Due to illness, violinist Leila Josefowicz has had to cancel this weekend’s appearances with the VSO. The program will instead feature violinist Shannon Lee performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.”
VSO Music Director Jaime Laredo conducts a program featuring a rare Vermont appearance from international violin superstar Leila Josefowicz performing Alban Berg’s unconventionally gorgeous Violin Concerto.**
The program opens with Richard Wagner’s luscious, yearning Prelude und Liebestod, comprised of themes from the beginning and end of his epic four-hour opera Tristan and Isolde.
The program closes with Felix Mendelssohn’s fifth symphony, given the name “Reformation Symphony” by Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny because it was written to honor a key event of the Protestant Reformation.
